A 3-year-old child who was playing with a handgun at a Northeast Colorado Springs home on Saturday fired and hit a toddler, say police.

The shooting occurred around 1:40 p.m. on the 4300 block of Driftwood Drive, said Lt. Howard Black, a spokesman for Colorado Springs police.

The 2-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital where he was reported in critical but stable condition, Black said.

Police did not release the other toddler’s gender or specify if the children were related or release information about who else was in the home when the incident occurred.

This is very preliminary information,” Black said. “This is what we think we have at this time.”

Black said the shooting appeared to be accidental. He stressed the importance of keeping loaded weapons secure and out of children’s reach.

Apparently the gun wasn’t locked away,” he added.
