A staggering 40 percent of human trafficking reported cases in the U.S. involved the sexual exploitation of a child, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics. Kids as young as 12 years-old are being trafficked for sexual exploitation.

What are the signs of a child who is being exploited?

  1. A child who often does household chores
  2. This child will rarely leave the house
  3. A child who is inappropriately dressed or looks malnourished
  4. Signs of physical or sexual abuse (bruises, scars, or cigarette burns)
  5. Appear to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
  6. Often a tattoo with the word “Daddy” or the traffickers name
  7. Most cases this child is an orphan or living away from their family
  8. Living in below the usual standard of living conditions
  9. The child does not know the city or town they live in or if travelling does not know the destinations and/or flight details
  10. Will not be registered at a school or a medical center
  11. Does not have any identity documents
  12. These children are often seen in inappropriate places
  13. The child speaks very little and when they do gives a scripted story

What are the signs an adult is exploiting a child:

  • Many visa applications
  • Often travelling with different children
  • Always remains in close proximity to the child and will speak for the child
  • Living with unrelated children
  • Claims they don’t know a child, who they were previously seen with

If you spot any of the signs above it is important to note that it does not necessarily mean a child is being trafficked. However should you suspect, do not confront the suspected trafficker, rather call emergency services.
